US Vetoes UNSC Resolution Rejecting Jerusalem Declaration
Haley Condemns Unanimous Yes Votes as 'An Insult'
Jason Ditz
With all 14 other UN Security Council members backing a resolution that would reject President Trump’s declaration of Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel, the US exercised its veto power, forbidding the resolution from getting through.
The veto was quickly and loudly praised by Israel, but since the resolution itself didn’t appearto have any more practical weight than the declaration itself, the end result was once again to reflect just how isolated the US and Israel are on the issue.
It also gave US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley a chance to express outrage, saying she views the unanimous yes votes that led to the veto as a grave insult to the United States, and one the administration won’t forget.
The Palestinians had suggested, even before the vote, that a veto would lead them to seek redress from the UN General Assembly, Since the world overwhelmingly opposes the US move, any such vote would be expected to pass easily.
