Who is Hope Hicks?
The new White House Director of Strategic Communications who replaced the incredible character of Anthony Scaramucci is a 28-year old former Ralph Lauren model who is President Trump's longest serving political aide. I was a little bit taken aback when I realized that the person now charge of advising the President of the United States on the strategic communications policy of the American Government and coordinating the media work of the Trump administration is only 28 years old. Indeed, before Ms. Hicks began to work on the Trump campaign she had no prior political or governmental experience whatsoever and had never worked on a political campaign or in a political institution in her young life. So who exactly is Hope Hicks and how has she risen so fast, so young to such an important position within the American Government?
Hope Hicks was born on October 21st 1988 when Mr. Trump was 42 years old and was still married to his first wife Ivana Trump. President Trump's first son was 11 years old when Ms. Hicks was born while his first daughter was 7 years old and his second son was 4 years old. Ms. Hicks worked as a teenage model for the famed East Coast preppy/patrician American fashion house Ralph Lauren at the age of 11 (ironically the fashion designer Ralph Lauren was Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign fashion designer having lost her favoured Oscar de La Renta who passed away in 2014) and Hope went on to grace the cover of "The It Girl" in 2005 at the tender age of 17 years old. After attending a good university in the American south of SMU - Dallas, Texas Ms. Hicks went to work in PR in New York City for President Trump's daughter Ivanka helping Ms. Trump with her fashion brand. Ms. Trump was so impressed with Ms. Hicks that she recommended Hope to work full time for the Trump Organisation inside Trump Tower in August 2014 a year just before Ivanka's father decided to run for the Presidency and with it make political history by ripping up the traditional political/electoral/campaigning rule book.
It was while working full time for the Trump Organisation inside Trump Tower that Hope Hicks caught the eye of Donald Trump. Impressed with the 26 year old at that time Donald Trump asked her in January 2015 to be his Press Secretary for a potential Presidential campaign he was thinking of launching. Ms. Hicks talents and abilities must have been extremely impressive because when Donald Trump selected her for the role of his Press Secretary she had never worked in politics, government or even on a political campaign (even as a volunteer) ever before. It is quite an achievement in the revolving cast of characters of the Trump campaign and Trump administration that Ms. Hicks has not only survived and thrived but now has the distinction of being President Trump's longest serving political aide. While Paul Manafort, Steve Bannon, Sean Spicer, Reince Priebus, Sebastian Gorka, Anthony Scaramucci et al have either left of their own volition or been eased out - Hope Hicks is still there.
Now Ms. Hicks is in a very important and powerful position inside the Trump administration. It is Hope Hicks whom the President dictates his tweets to and Ms. Hicks handles President Trump's Twitter account for him. It is Hope Hicks who has the ear of the President on matters relating to his twitter account, communications messaging, media appearances etc. While working as Candidate Trump's Press Secretary Hope Hicks lived in a Trump owned apartment in Manhattan.
Ms. Hicks gushed to the press recently that: "President Trump has a magnetic personality and exudes positive energy, which is infectious to those around him. He has an unparalleled ability to communicate with people .... He has built great relationships throughout his life and treats everyone with respect. He is brilliant with a great sense of humor … and an amazing ability to make people feel special and aspire to be more than even they thought possible." Indeed Mr. Trump seems to have brought out the best in Ms. Hicks given that she is only 28 years old and only had a background in fashion PR prior to becoming Press Secretary to Candidate Trump and now White House Director of Strategic Communications. Perhaps Ms. Hicks talents will come to define real "Hope" in the White House after-all.
