Morgan Freeman Joins Propaganda War Effort

On September 19, film director Rob Reiner launched his project "The Committee to Investigate Russia” to conduct an inquiry into whether Russia tampered with the US presidential election. The new nonpartisan group is “a nonprofit, non-partisan resource”, which aims to inform Americans about the “grave national security threat” posed by Russia's “ongoing interference” in the US affairs. The director of “When Harry Met Sally” partnered with David Frum, the senior editor of The Atlantic. There are also some actual heavy hitters involved. For instance, the committee’s website lists military historian Max Boot, former director of national intelligence James Clapper, American Enterprise Institute resident scholar Norman Ornstein, and conservative commentator Charles Sykes as members of the advisory board.

Morgan Freeman, the Oscar winner and five-time Golden Globe nominee, is featured in a video running on the organization website, encouraging Americans to fight back against Russia's influence. “We have been attacked. We are at war,” says the movie star, calling on President Trump to address the nation about the “attack” the United States “came under” during the presidential election.

The actor has won his critical acclaim playing the roles of good guys normally characterized by high intellect. The star has played God twice — once opposite Jim Carrey in 2003's “Bruce Almighty” and again with Steve Carell in 2007's “Evan Almighty.” When he says something like “Russia is our enemy”, the chances are high that an average American would listen to him and take his words seriously. It’s important that the actor is black. Freeman's eloquent, distinctive voice has also made him a natural for narration. One should give the devil his due – those who are waging the anti-Russia information war have made a good choice.

In the video, Freeman states, “For 241 years our democracy has been a shining example to the world of what we can all aspire to. And we owe it to the brave people who have fought and died to protect this great nation and save democracy. And we owe it to our future generations to continue the fight.”

So, America has been a shining example starting from 1776. And he is talking about the country where slavery lasted till 1865! The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 of the Parliament of the United Kingdom abolished slavery throughout the British Empire, including the neighboring Canada. If the US were part of the UK, there would have been no cause for the Civil War.

Not long after Morgan Freeman was born, his parents struggling under the pressures of the Jim Crow South, relocated from Charleston, Mississippi, to Chicago to find jobs. The Civil Rights Act barring discrimination and segregation in education, public facilities, jobs, and housing was enacted only in 1964! Segregation lasted for 188 years! The race problem is still unsolved as recent street protests illustrate.

According to Ward Churchill, a professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado, the reduction of the North American Indian population from an estimated 12 million in 1,500 to barely 237,000 in 1900 represents a "vast genocide..., the most sustained on record." The historic period mentioned by Morgan Freeman also includes the annexation of Mexican lands. The nuclear attack against Hiroshima and Nagasaki should not be forgotten, as well as the use of napalm in Vietnam.

It was only in 1988 that President Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act to compensate about 120,000 people of Japanese descent who were incarcerated in internment camps during World War II. The legislation offered a formal apology and paid out $20,000 in compensation to each surviving victim. The law won congressional approval only after a decade-long public campaign. The list of the examples of “shining democracy” can be continued.

The actor does not mention the airstrikes against former Yugoslavia, the illegal war in Iraq, the intervention in Libya and many other numerous invasions and interventions. No, it’s something else the Freeman’s video address is about – a non-existent attack, which is a figment of the imagination. He is talking about an ongoing war with the country, whose leader was the first to offer condolences to then President George Bush after the 9/11 tragedy.

It should be noted that the history of the bilateral relationship does not offer any examples of “the brave people who have fought and died to protect this great nation and save democracy.” The two nations have never been at war. There have been ups and downs in the relations but it never came to blows.

It’s not surprising that the Hollywood stars are used for propaganda purposes with the information war going on. The US government and Hollywood have always been close. The files, mainly obtained through the US Freedom of Information Act, show that between 1911 and 2017, more than 800 feature films received support from the US Department of Defense. The US government involvement also includes script rewrites on some of the biggest and most popular films, including James Bond, the Transformers franchise, and movies from the Marvel and DC cinematic universes.

According to the article written by Mathew Alford, a teaching fellow in propaganda and theory at the University of Bath, published by the Independent, over 1,100 titles on US television received Pentagon backing – 900 of them since 2005, from Flight 93 to Ice Road Truckers to Army Wives. For its part, the CIA has assisted in 60 film and television shows since its formation in 1947. This is a much lower figure than the DoD’s, but its role has nonetheless been significant. US lawmakers have asked questions about the relationship between the CIA and Hollywood.
