Pentagon Attacks Extremists At Home...But Finances Them Overseas

written by daniel mcadams

After the violence in Charlottesville last week, the Pentagon took the unusual step of publicly denouncing the racial bigotry of the neo-Nazis who participated in the violent rallies. The Pentagon has had a good record of helping integrate Americans even in the dark days of government-enforced Jim Crow laws. But at nearly the same time that Pentagon top brass was making this denunciation it was preparing to ship millions of dollars of weapons to a Ukrainian government dominated by outright Nazis and Nazi sympathizers. Isn't there more than a little hypocrisy in that? In fact, US interventionist foreign policy relies on extremist groups overseas to do Washington's bidding. Look no further than Syria, Afghanistan (in the 1970s), Latin America (1980s), Saudi Arabia, etc...
