Top Senator: Trump Won’t Tear Up Iran Nuclear Deal

Corker Believes Trump Will 'Radically Enforce' Pact

by Jason Ditz,

Senate Foreign Relations Committee chair Sen. Bob Corker (R – TN) was one of many long-standing opponents of the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran, but today insisted he doesn’t want to see the deal torn up, adding that he is confidentPresident-elect Donald Trump will not do so.
Corker now says he believes tearing up the deal would be “a crisis” and that the US needs to “radically enforce” the terms of the pact instead of just unilaterally trying to withdraw from it. There have been other suggestions from Trump transition team figures this is to be the approach too.
Corker went on to argue that the goal was, if the Iran deal was to collapse it was someone else’s fault, and not the result of a new US president “coming in on day one and ripping up the agreement.” Sen. Corker also insisted that there was nothing so bad with the P5+1 deal it would lead to anything happening over the next few years.
Trump had promised during the campaign to either end the deal outright or negotiate better terms for it, though as a practical matter, many are noting that the US is only one of seven signatories to the pact and can’t unilaterally collapse the deal globally.
