How a Canadian Sikh was photoshopped to look like a Paris attacker
On Saturday, Veerender Jubbal woke up to a social media nightmare. The Canadian Sikh discovered that a photoshopped version of his bathroom mirror selfie was circulating on social media as a photograph of one of the terrorists behind the Paris attacks.
Jubbal soon took to Twitter to clarify the misunderstanding.
So, like, it spread.
Has spread to the point, where many people have had to tweet about the photos being photoshopped.. Any support/nice messages are welcome.
The controversy grew on Sunday morning, when the photoshopped image was printed on the front page of one of Spain's biggest newspapers La Razon and captioned "one of the terrorists". It later apologised for the misunderstanding.
The doctored image had originally been posted by Jubbal on his Twitter handle on Aug. 5. In the photoshopped image, the iPad has been morphed into a Quran, with a suicide vest added over his shirt.
It hasn't been established who was behind the doctoring, but Jubbal hinted that it may be related to his criticism of the controversial GamerGate movement. Jubbal, who describes himself as a freelance writer, games critic and diversity consultant on Twitter, had also started the #StopGamerGate2014 hashtag. According to several Storify threads, he has been attacked before for his pro-diversity stance in gaming.
However despite the controversy, Jubbal maintains that he is as "cute as gosh", "valuable, and rad".
Learn the difference between me being a Sikh, and a Muslim.
Cry in mug, while I use your tears to water my garden.
I am valuable, and rad.
Jubbal has received an outpouring of support on Twitter, with many people underlining the media's responsibility in verifying viral photos from social media and the issue of racial profiling.
Portraying @Veeren_Jubbal as a terrorist puts his life at risk, ruins his reputation. This is online terrorism.
