Be careful of what you share: this picture is NOT from the Kailali Clash
After violent clashes erupted in Kailali—where at least 8 people were killed, including a two-year-old child—news, comments, rants, erupted in social media.
And with such influx of information on the web, sometimes wrong pictures get circulated. That is exactly what has happened. This picture, of a man doused in fire, was circulated in social media and people believed it to be from the Kailali riot, where a police officer was burnt alive.
However, Panos South Asia, a non-profit organisation that checks facts for accurate information, has clarified that this picture is not from Kailali. “This picture is NOT from the Kailali Protest, a blogsite used this photograph in a news piece about the violence in Tikapur in Kailali, Nepal earlier,” states Panos on its site. “The news does not provide caption for the photo of a burning man. Therefore, it might lead to an impression that it is from today’s incident in Tikapur.”
Panos South Asia says that fact-check shows that this is an old photo from United States’ Florida and is from February 2012.
This is not the first time that a wrong image went viral. Remember the picture below?
In the aftermath of the Great Quake, this picture went viral-nationally and internationally- as many believed it to be a moment between two young survivors of the massive earthquake. But it turned out to be false!
The photo was taken eight years ago in northern Vietnam. Vietnamese photographer Na Son Nguyen, told the BBC: "I took this picture in October 2007 in Can Ty, a remote village in Ha Giang province".
Be careful of what you share on social media!
