Will Israel Profit From West Bank Oil?

New reports indicate that the Israeli Meged 5 oil field, which has been in operation since 2011 and sold some $40million worth of oil, may contain up to 3.35 billion barrels of oil—enough to make Israel a major oil producer. Except that much of the new reserve actually lies in Palestinian soil, so Israeli exploitation of the resources is illegal under international law and would be a boost to the Israeli economy at the expense of Palestinians.
Under the pretext of “security,” Israel moved the course of its Apartheid Wall to ensure that Givot Olam, the Israeli oil exploration company responsible for locating the oil reserves, would have unfettered access to the site, according to a report in Al Jazeera.
The Meged site is at least a “few dozen meters” inside the Green Line, according to Israeli researcher Dror Etkes, who records Israeli activities in the West Bank.
Palestinian official Ashraf Khatib told Al Jazeera that the Meged oilfield is part of a larger theme of Israeli "theft of Palestinian national resources."
"The problem for us,” he continued, ”is that the occupation is not just about settlements and land confiscation. Israel is also massively profiting from exploiting our resources. There's lots of money in it for Israel, which is why the occupation has become so prolonged.”
