Ancient India made the move a long time ago - for the same reasons , i think.

The elite, cattle sacrificing beef eating brahmins, led the way and vegetarianism became the   desired norm.  To move up the caste ladder the meat eating lower castes  had to give up their meat .  They did ! Willingly !
