Trump is presenting the resignation of Iran’s oil minister, Mohsen Paknejad, as proof that his sanctions and blockade are working. They are not. Paknejad had asked to leave for personal reasons months ago, and President repeatedly refused. This time, he agreed and appointed the former oil minister as an adviser. It was a domestic matter that had been unfolding for months and was extensively reported in the Iranian media. US officials would have known this had they bothered to read. Paknejad’s resignation has nothing to do with Washington. If resignations are the yardstick, however, the Trump administration should look closer to home. How many US political, intelligence and military officials have resigned in direct protest against this war? Joe Kent, Trump’s hand-picked director of the National Counterterrorism Center and a Green Beret veteran, resigned in March, declaring that Iran posed no imminent threat. How many others have broken with the war? How many of Trump’s own supporters, from Tucker Carlson to Marjorie Taylor Greene to Matt Walsh, have turned against a conflict that betrays his promise to end America’s forever wars? Seven months into the war, the Pentagon has also been swept by a wave of departures and senior-level purges. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has removed his own generals, including Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, while Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has left after months of clashes. The war has already produced a remarkable turnover at the highest levels of America’s military leadership. If resignations are the measure, then Trump should explain the wave of resignations and purges inside his own administration and military leadership before claiming that one routine ministerial departure in Tehran proves his war is working.

Trump on Iran: Iran's oil minister just quit. He said, "We have no economy, we have no oil, we have nothing."
