The Golan Heights was Syrian territory. Israel occupied it in 1967. It annexed it in 1981. The entire world except the United States under Trump rejected that annexation. It remains occupied Syrian land under international law.

Netanyahu knows this. That's why he's reaching for the Bible. Because he has no legal argument. No historical argument that holds up. No international consensus. Just a book.

The Bible mentions a city called "Golan" a city of refuge in the territory of Bashan. It does not mention the "Golan Heights" as a region. It does not say the Jews had sovereignty over the entire plateau. It does not say they lived there continuously for 3,000 years. It does not say God gave it to them as a modern nation-state.

And even if it did, so what?

If the Bible is a land deed, then Italy can claim all of Europe because of the Roman Empire. Greece can claim Turkey. Egypt can claim the Sinai. Iraq can claim Kuwait. Iran can claim the entire Persian Empire. Every nation on Earth can claim every territory it ever controlled in ancient times.

But Netanyahu doesn't apply that logic to anyone else. Only to Israel.

Why the Golan? Not because of Moses. Because of water. The Golan Heights is the source of the Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee. It supplies Israel with roughly one-third of its fresh water. It is also a strategic military plateau that overlooks northern Israel and southern Syria. It has nothing to do with Moses and everything to do with resources and power.

Netanyahu is not making a religious argument. He is making a colonial argument dressed in religious clothing.

He wants Jolani, the new Syrian president to accept Israeli occupation. He wants him to abandon Syrian claims to the Golan. He wants him to normalize relations with Israel while Israel keeps stolen land. He wants him to be another Arab leader who sells out his own people for a seat at the table.

Jolani has not responded. But he should know the truth: the Golan is Syrian. It was occupied. It is not Israeli. It will not be Israeli. And no amount of Bible verses will change that.

The Jews were not on the Golan since Moses. The Israelis have been on the Golan since 1967. And they will leave when Syria is strong enough to make them leave.

That is the truth. And the Bible does not change it.
