I know exactly where that sentence is coming from.
You look at the history and your whole body says,
"Nobody gets this depraved by accident."
You are right about one thing for sure.
This did not start yesterday.
It did not start with Trump.
It did not start with Gaza.
It runs through slave ships, lynch mobs, reservations, coups, napalm, sanctions, and now drones.
The depravity did not just start.
It is a long project.
Where I differ is on "born evil."
"Born evil" is the language empires have always used about us.
Africans were born savage.
Natives were born primitive.
Arabs were born fanatical.
Vietnamese were born expendable.
If we say "Americans are born evil," we are not breaking their spell.
We are repeating it with the names reversed.
For me the truth is even more disturbing than biology.
They are not born that way.
They are made that way.
From childhood they are soaked in a story where:
Their flag is innocent by definition.
Their comfort is proof of their goodness.
Their wars are always mistakes, never crimes.
Their victims are always "regrettable," never central.
You pour a child through that machine for 20 or 30 years and you do not need them to be born evil.
You just need them to be busy, scared, indebted, and proud enough to think their life is worth more than yours.
That does not excuse them.
It actually removes their excuse.
If it was in their blood, they could say, "We cannot help it."
But it is not in their blood.
It is in their schools, screens, churches, careers, and ballots.
They had chances to refuse this.
Some did and paid a price.
Most did not.
So I do not call them "born evil."
I call them what they are.
A population that was carefully trained to live normal lives on top of abnormal violence.
And that training can, in some of them, be broken.
Which is exactly why empire wants us to believe there is nothing in them but darkness.
