Sen. Jack Reed just torched Secretary Hegseth’s Iran claim.
Hegseth argued the ceasefire means the administration doesn’t need congressional authorization to keep U.S. forces in the fight past 60 days.
Reed’s response was surgical:
“The language of the statutes does not provide for timeouts like in a football game. From the day you begin, 60 days, the president has to comply with the law.”
No pauses. No resets. No “we’re in a ceasefire so the clock stops” loophole.
The War Powers Resolution clock started the moment American forces engaged. Period.
This is exactly why the Founders gave Congress the power of the purse and the authority to declare war.
The law doesn’t bend for convenience.
