Unbelievable!
You have probably noticed that Netanyahu has kept a very low profile since Dec 30 (after he visited Trump in DC and Mar-a-Lago and apparently managed to convince Trump to attack Iran). He kept a low profile presumably to avoid being seen as the force behind war with Iran, given sensitivities among the MAGA constituency.
But now that Trump may be seeking a deal instead of war, not only is Netanyahu coming back to DC to press Trump to go to war, but also, he is coming with two new messages:
1. If the US doesn't bomb Iran, Israel will.
2. Iran's ballistic missile program is an "existential threat."
The first point is an empty threat since Israel cannot go to war with Iran without massive American support to defend it. The United States consumed 25% of all of its THAAD interceptors in the 12 day war to defend Israel.
The second point reveals how stupid and easily manipulated Israel considers US foreign policy decision makers.
Undoubtedly, Iran's missiles pose a threat to Israel in the same way that Israel's F35s pose a threat to Iran. But neither is an existential threat.
But whenever Israel wants the US to go to war with Iran on its behalf, it claims that Iran or its military capabilities pose an existential threat. For three decades, Israel claimed that Iran's centrifuges, or its enriched uranium, or its nuclear know how, etc etc constituted a "point of no return" for this "existential threat."
As soon as Trump bombed the nuclear program - on Israel's behalf - the Israelis shifted the goal post on the US and claimed that Iran's missiles now also constitute an existential threat. Anything to keep the war drums alive. If the missiles are neutralized, something else will be deemed an existential threat, rest assured.
This will continue until Trump decides that he no longer wants to play this game on behalf of Israel.
