🔴 “Extraordinary Meeting”: Scahill on Hamas–Fatah Talks and the Push for a Unified Palestinian Front in Egypt Jeremy Scahill told Democracy Now that while Hamas and Islamic Jihad are leading the negotiations because they are the ones engaged in the battle on the ground, their mandate is limited to resistance issues: withdrawal of Israeli forces, ceasefire, and prisoner exchange. Questions about Palestinian weapons or governance are not theirs to decide alone. Scahill also noted that Hamas has been coordinating with factions throughout the genocide and is now expanding discussions to additional factions, including the Palestinian National Initiative led by Dr. Mustafa Barghouti. He described an extraordinary meeting between Hamas’s Khalil al-Hayya and Fatah’s Hussein al-Sheikh in Egypt as part of a broader push for unity. The message from across the spectrum, he said, is that Palestinians must form a unified front to block what he described as a neo-colonial plan to privatize Gaza, bring in foreign troops, and strip the liberation project. |
