‘Writing in the New York Times today, Lillian Greenberg Call, the only Jewish Biden official to quit over Gaza, reveals that the California legislature is considering and is likely to pass a law that would penalize criticism of Israel. LINK.
Yes, the California bill would make speaking critically about Israel illegal. At a time when Israel is committing genocide in Gaza—destroying hospitals, bombing schools, killing civilians by the thousands—California legislators are contemplating criminalizing outrage, dissent, and moral judgment. (The bill was written, of course, by the Israel lobby.)…
This is what power looks like when it is unchallenged and unrestrained. This is what happens when foreign policy preferences—promoted by a well-funded, aggressive lobbying apparatus—override the most fundamental principles of a democracy. The Israel lobby is not asking for nuance or debate; it is demanding legal control over speech itself. They want to make moral judgment illegal.
