How is this for hypocrisy? Three years ago the BBC expressed outrage at Russia invading Ukraine, dismissing as lies Putin's two main justifications: that he wished to prevent the West expanding towards Russia's borders, and to protect ethnic Russians in western Ukraine being targeted by the Ukrainian army.
In stark contrast, the BBC matter-of-factly reported tonight Israel's bombing of Syrian government offices in Damascus – just as it has been reporting in neutral tones Israel's now-unremarkable occupation of south-west Syria. Both constitute grossly illegal attacks on Syrian sovereignty.
The BBC similarly accepted at face value Israel's two main justifications: that it is worried about Arabs controlling Syrian lands near its border, and wishes to protect the Syrian Druze from being targeted by the Syrian army.
How are these two cases different? If they are, it is in this regard only:
Russia gives every appearance of actually wanting to protect its ethnic kin in Ukraine, who were indeed being slaughtered in a devastating ethnic civil war in Ukraine before Russia's invasion.
Israel, on the other hand, has treated the Druze as nothing more than pawns in its ethnic and sectarian divide-and-rule games in the region and as an excuse for further land grabs.
Before its latest occupation of south-west Syria, Israel had been occupying the Syrian Golan for decades. How did Druze communities there regard Israeli rule? With utter revulsion.
