It is officially termed: IPC Phase 5: Catastrophe/Famine Definition • Catastrophe: Individuals face an extreme lack of food, resulting in starvation, death, destitution, and extremely critical acute malnutrition. • Famine: Declared when: • 20% of the population has extreme food gaps. • 30% of children suffer acute malnutrition. • 2 or more deaths per 10,000 people per day are recorded. ⸻ Human Impact • People are dying of hunger. • Parents skip meals for their children. • Children are so malnourished they can no longer cry. • Organ failure, immune collapse, and death by infection or exhaustion are common. ⸻ Examples • Somalia (2011) • Ethiopia (1984) • Currently: Gaza, with 85% of the population reportedly in Phase 5 — a level of human suffering rarely seen in modern history.
